Painted on location on Hackpen Hill at the end of the day, the study records the moment the sun found a gap in the cloud at the horizon after an afternoon of flat grey light — a concentrated burst of orange warmth low in the sky, the downland below reduced to a darkening strip. The painting was made quickly as the light came and went, the wash laid directly and left alone.
